OI does not balloon near expiry. Rollovers   take place but not to the full extent of outstanding. Percentage rollover is one of the actively tracked indicators to gauge sentiment.  There is really something cooking. NIFTY OI which was in the range of 250-300 lakhs for the past several weeks has suddenly spurted to 390 lakhs yesterday.

Because we are near expiry. OI often "baloons" as expiry approaches, and
also rollovers take place.
