Resuming 205 points above its previous close (10,428), strong buying led by heavyweights, consumer durables (CD), realty and information technology (IT) stocks triggered a major rally that propelled the index to an intra-day high of 10,750 in afternoon trades. Though the Sensex held firm ground above 10,600 for the better part of the trading session, it finally ended at 10,683, up 460 points. The Nifty advanced 112 points to close at 3,235.
Among the gainers in heavyweights, Jaiprakash Associates soared 16.25% at Rs78.70, Tata Consultancy Services flared up 12.86% at Rs561, Reliance Communications jumped 11.25% at Rs258.20, Tata Steel scaled up 10.20% at Rs278.30, Satyam Computer Services surged 9.84% at Rs317.45, Tata Power added 9.60% at Rs789.55, Sterlite Industries jumped 8.59% at Rs294.70 and ACC gained 7.52% at Rs493.55. However, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hindalco Industries eased marginally.
The market breadth was extremely positive. Of the 2,651 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,613 stocks advanced whereas 975 stocks declined. Sixty three stocks ended unchanged. On the sectoral front, the BSE CD index led the gainers pack followed by BSE Realty (up 8.32%), BSE IT (up 6.03%), BSE CG (up 5.48%), BSE Teck (up 4.66%) and BSE Power (up 4.36%).
