| | | After remaining close for three days and losing over 400 points in the last week, the Sensex started the day at 14,681, 43 points lower than the Thrusday’s close. However the index recovered by mid-morning trades largely on the back of information technology (IT) stocks. Gyrating between positive and negative territories for the major part of the day due to selling in select frontline stocks, the 30-stock Sensex finally ended the day at 14,646, down 79 points, while the the 50-stock Nifty shed 38 points and closed at 4,393.
The market breadth was negative. Of the 2,676 stocks traded on BSE, 1,668 (62%) stocks declined, 930 (32%) stocks advanced and 78 stocks ended unchanged. Of the 13 sectoral indices, only BSE IT index posted gains, up measly 0.75%. BSE Oil & Gas index topped the list of losing indices and shed 1.97% during the day, followed by BSE Metal index (down 1.82%) and BSE Power index (down 1.52%).
Selective buying however helped the Sensex recover losses incurred during the day. HDFC gained 3.12% at Rs2,359.75, HDFC Bank advanced 2.14% at Rs1,200.40 and Satyam Computer Services added 1.75% at Rs419.10. Larsen & Toubro , Tata Consultancy Services, Hindustan Unilever, Infosys, ONGC and Wipro notched up steady gains.
Select heavyweights witnessed selling during the day. Hindalco dropped 4.53% at Rs129.65, Grasim Industries declined 4.52% at Rs1,963.50, Reliance Communications tumbled 2.71% at Rs412.40, Mahindra & Mahindra shed 2.56% at Rs568.10, ACC dipped 2.52% at Rs594.40, Reliance Industries was down 2.21% at Rs2224.95 and Tata Steel shed 2.14% at Rs603.
