Market Commentary

Realty stocks rally

While selling drags most of the stocks from higher levels, realty stocks hold on to their gains and end firm.

The market failed to hold on to its first-half gains and buckled under sustained selling pressure in noon trades, with Sensex gyrating around 214 points during

intra-day trades. Shrugging off weak US and European indices, Sensex took cue from mixed Asian indices in early trades and rallied sharply on strong buying support to touch the day's high of 9725, up 141 points over the last close of 9584. However, the ongoing bearish trend pulled the market down with the index plunging deep into the red to touch an intra-day low of 9511, down 73 points from the last close. Sensex managed to recover losses of 73 points towards the fag end and ended the session above 9600-mark at 9647, up 64 points, while Nifty advanced 15 points to close at 2935.

The breadth of the market was strong. Of the 2,576 stocks traded on the BSE 1,387 stocks advanced, 1,080 stocks declined and 109 stocks ended unchanged. BSE Realty gained sharply and advanced 6.58% followed by BSE CG (up 3.14%), BSE Bankex (up 1.16%) and BSE HC (up 1.14%).

Several index heavyweights surged and ended with gains. DLF led Sensex and advanced nearly 8.40% at Rs151.60, Bharat Heavy Electricals moved up 4.11% at Rs1,450, Mahindra & Mahindra raised 3.96% at Rs285.15, Larsen & Toubro soared 3.07% at Rs695.10, Reliance Communications gained 2.94% at Rs171.30, HDFC Bank declined by 2.82% at Rs945, Maruti Suzuki India advanced by 2.30% at Rs232.15 and Ranbaxy Laboratories was up 2.04% at Rs232.15. Select counters, however, were down for the day. Satyam Computer Services (Satyam) lost 3.47% at Rs44.50, Reliance Energy added 2.86% at Rs561, Tisco lost 2.20% at Rs195.15 and Hindalco Industries moved down by 2.07% at Rs44.90.

Over 1.02 crore shares of Satyam changed hands on BSE followed by DLF (94.03 lakh shares), JP Associates (63.22 lakh shares), Reliance Communications (53.30 lakh shares) and Tisco (46.75 lakh shares).
