The opening was promising supported by good volumes and positive market breadth. | 
| | | Buoyancy in heavyweights, realty, metal and oil stocks in afternoon helped Sensex touch the day's high of 9,410. However as trading progressed Sensex lost its momentum and gave up its early gains on across-the-board selling and entered the negative territory. The market appeared to be heading towards a negative close, but select buying at lower levels helped Sensex wrap-up the session with a gain of six points at 9,330. Nifty closed 18 points up at 2,846.
Market breadth was positive. Of the 2,472 stocks traded on BSE, 1,353 stocks advanced, whereas 1,024 stocks declined. Ninty five stocks ended unchanged. Among sectoral indices, BSE Realty flared up by 2.17%, BSE Metal rose 1.85%, BSE Oil Index moved up 1.46% and BSE CG was up 1.32%.
Barring the few the Sensex stocks ended at higher levels. JP Associates flared up 4.69% at Rs69.20, Sterlite Industries shot up by 3.45% at Rs270.65, ONGC zoomed 3.45% at Rs670.50, Bharti Airtel moved up by 2.23% at Rs646.95, Tata Steel scaled up 1.98% at Rs208.20, Hindalco Industries surged by 1.50% at Rs50.75, Larsen & Toubro jumped by 1.45% at Rs728 and Reliance Communications gained 1.29% at Rs184.95.
