The 30-stock Sensex of the BSE started the day 445 points lower at 13,086 taking cue from weak Asian indices and crashed to the day's low of 13,052 on relentless selling pressure amid high volatility. The market showed strong optimism thereafter and the Sensex witnessed a sharp turn-around, as gains in heavyweight, oil & gas and banking stocks propelled it to an intra-day high of 13,556. For the later part of the trading session, the market was extremely choppy and gyrated between the positive and negative territories. The Sensex closed the session with a marginal loss of 12 points at 13,519, while the 50-stock Nifty of the NSE ended two points up at 4,075. The market breadth was negative. Of the 2,711 stocks that traded on the BSE, 1,752 stocks declined, 886 stocks advanced and 73 stocks ended unchanged. Most of the sectoral indices ended in the red. The BSE Realty index declined 3.93% at 4,163 followed by the BSE CD index (down 2.88% at 3,338.22) and the BSE HC index (up 2.20% at 3,941). However, the BSE Oil index rose 1.29% at 8,928, the BSE Bankex (up 0.89% at 6,852) and the BSE PSU index (up 0.39% at 6,461). Among the Sensex stocks, SBI was the leading gainer and its stock price soared 6.49% at Rs1,585.50. Among the other stocks, Sterlite Industries advanced 2.66% at Rs477.70, RIL jumped 2.35% at Rs1,928.45, HDFC Bank gained 2.16% at Rs1,230.05, ITC moved up by 2.16% at Rs194, Tata Motors added 2% at Rs398.40 and Bharti Airtel surged 1.21% at Rs774.75. Among the laggards, ICICI Bank slipped 5.82% at Rs591.35, JP Associates shed 5.09% at Rs139.80, Maruti Suzuki India declined by 3.55% at Rs697.75, Ranbaxy Laboratories fell by 3.23% at Rs405.90 and Satyam Computer Services lost 3.21% at Rs356.35. Over 1.49 crore shares of Reliance Natural Resources changed hands on the BSE followed by IFCI (1.05 crore shares), Ispat Industries (70.49 lakh shares), Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals (64 lakh shares) and GVK Power (55.99 lakh shares).
