However, the market witnessed some profit taking and slipped to an intra-day low of 13120. The sustained buying in heavyweight, information technology and banking stocks pulled up the Sensex to the day's high of 13421. The mood remained buoyant throughout the entire session but selective profit booking at upper levels saw the market shed some gains in the afternoon. The Sensex ended the session at 13384, up 270 points. The Nifty closed at 3917, up 87 points. | |
The breadth of the market was positive. Of the 2,634 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,560 stocks advanced, 988 stocks declined and 86 stocks ended unchanged. Among the sectoral indices the BSE IT Index surged 3.94% at 5072 followed by the BSE Teck Index (up 3.19% at 3638), the BSE Auto Index (up 2.94% at 4818) and the BSE Bankex (up 2.62% at 6640).
Most of the Sensex stocks finished with gains. TCS surged 5.13% at Rs1,263, Wipro notched up gains of 5.11% at Rs568, Bajaj Auto added 4.03% at Rs2,444, SBI advanced 3.24% at Rs999, Hero Honda Motors gained 3.13% at Rs648, Tata Steel added 3.08% at Rs511, Reliance Communications advanced 3.08% at Rs422 and ACC was up 3.01% at Rs748. The other heavyweights were up 1-2% each. However, ITC shed 1.86% at Rs153 and NTPC slipped 1.56% at Rs157.
Among the information technology stocks HCL Technology surged 7.30% at Rs308, Tech Mahindra spurted 6.13% at Rs1,494, Patni Computers jumped 5.41% at Rs423, Financial Technologies added 3.34% at Rs1,991, Mphasis gained 2.09% at Rs289 and i-flex Solutions was up 1.87% at Rs2,240.
Over 1.78 crore IFCI shares changed hands on the BSE followed by ICRA (1.24 crore shares), Petronet LNG (55.31 lakh shares), Idea Cellular (48.39 lakh shares) and Reliance Natural Resources (44.80 lakh shares).
ICRA registered a turnover of Rs875 crore on the BSE followed by Infosys (Rs283 crore), Tata Steel (Rs139 crore), Satyam Computers (Rs103 crore) and Tech Mahindra (Rs83 crore).
