Lavazza, Italy's best-selling espresso brand, has agreed to buy a 7 percent stake in Vermont-based Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in a deal valued at $250 million, the companies said Wednesday. Lavazza said the deal, expected to be completed in September, is its biggest foreign acquisition ever and consolidates its strategy of international expansion. The companies will develop together new single-serving espresso machines and espresso capsules for the new brewers, expected to reach the market in 2013. Lavazza, based in the northern city of Turin, has in recent years bought companies in India, Brazil and Argentina as part of its moves to grow overseas.
