Over 300 ports are proposed across India's coastline, of which over 200 have been notified. Many of these projects are located in and around mangroves, breeding grounds of marine turtles, other vulnerable marine species and habitats. Inspite of all the opposition against the Dhamra port in Orissa and the threat it poses to the Bitharkanika and Gahirmatha protected areas, and endangered species like the Olive Ridley Turtle, lessons are yet to be learnt. We cannot let Dhamra happen again. Here's a fun way to send your message to Minister Ramesh and save India's coastal environment: Write a letter to Minister Ramesh asking him to protect our coasts and then play the Tata vs. Turtles game. http://greenpeace.in/turtle/turtle-vs-tata If more and more people write to the minister he will have to take notice of the issue. The Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification issued in 1991 was meant to safeguard our coasts. Over the years it has been weakened to suit commercial and political interests. Minister Ramesh needs to add a clause prohibiting construction of new ports and expansion of existing ones near eco-sensitive areas to strengthen the CRZ notification. Write to the minister and ask him to protect India's coasts: http://greenpeace.in/turtle/turtle-vs-tata Thanks a billion! Ashish Fernandes Oceans Campaigner Greenpeace India P.S.
