The central panel has given nod to Bharti Airtel's proposal to lay a 12,091 km long undersea optical fibre cable passing through 8 countries from Marseilles (France) to Juhu Beach (Mumbai).

The optical fibre cable will connect from Marseilles (France) to Juhu Beach (Mumbai), passing through countries - Catania (Italy), Tripoli (Lebanon), Alexandria and Suez (Egypt), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Fujairah (UAE) and Karachi (Pakistan).

According to a source in the Environment Ministry states that the Expert Appraisal Committee for Building Construction, Coastal Regulation Zone, Infrastructure Development and Miscellaneous projects gave the Coastal Regulation Zone clearance to the proposal in a recent meeting held.

As per project proponent, the cable network linking will be complemented with 9 terminal stations forming a consortium of 9 leading telecom carriers from 8 countries.

The sources said the project eyes to meet the need of increased backhaul communications capabilities along the India-Western Europe route, as well as for increased capacity to support high bandwidth broadband services.

The central panel noted that as the project involves mere installation of the optical fibre cable, there was neither any change in the use of the beach nor any production and manufacturing processes involved in it.

Whereas, the on-shore construction activities includes - cable installation will be limited to a period of 4 days.

The panel asked the project proponent to ensure adequate safety measures to prevent cable damage under sea.
