VIEWPOINT: IIP EYED

 

After opening in the red, US markets saw a steady recovery through the trading session to close with nearly half a percent gain. Dow closed at 10611, within a striking distance from the intermediate high of 10730 made on 19th Jan. Earlier European markets ended lower and US market opened in the red on account of an inflation spike in China and a fear of potential interest rate hike on account of the same. The jobs report presented by US labor department was mixed, showing a decline in first time jobless claims filing but rise in four week moving average of claims. But US markets recovered subsequently, led by banking shares, as Citigroup Inc said that bank is on its way to sustained profitability and as Democrats gave up on bipartisan effort to overhaul financial regulation.

 

A last half an hour spike saved our markets from closing in red and helped the benchmark indices close about a third of a percent higher in yesterday's trade. Participation, however, continued to be narrower as broader indices continued to underperform. Today, the key data to watch out for will be the February Industrial Production data. 5092 continues to be immediate support, followed by 5049 while 5190-5220 is likely to act as a resistance zone.
