The Sensex opened with a positive gap | | | of 71 points at 10969 and touched the day's high of 11036 within a few minutes of trading on brisk buying in heavyweights. However, it shed its early gains on account of heavy selling in realty, consume durable (CD), capital goods (CG) and auto stocks and entered the negative territory by afternoon. The Sensex swung between negative and positive thereafter, as investors turned cautious due to lack of clarity. The Sensex tumbled below the 10800 mark towards afternoon session to touch the intra-day low of 10716 amid relentless selling pressure, but buying at lower levels helped Sensex pare some of the losses. The Sensex finally closed at 10898, down 81 points, while Nifty ended 35 points down at 3330. The market breadth was weak, as losers outpaced gainers. Of the 2,599 stocks trading on the BSE, 1,443 stocks declined, whereas 1,064 stocks advanced. Ninety two stocks ended unchanged. Select sectoral indices slipped sharply. The BSE Realty index dropped 4.57% followed by the BSE CD index (down 4.05%), the BSE CG index (down 2.94%) and the BSE Auto index (down 1.91%). Most of the index heavyweights witnessed correction. Among the Sensex majors, DLF tumbled by 4.19% at Rs227.40, Hero Honda dropped 3.72% at Rs760, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd lost 3.67% at Rs1581.10, Larsen & Toubro slumped by 3.61% at Rs823, Tata Power slipped by 3.41% at Rs850, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation shed 3.37% at Rs833.50, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries lost 3.37% at Rs1180, Sterlite Industries fell by 3.27% at Rs370, Mahindra & Mahindra crumbled by 2.37% at Rs427.55 and Ranbaxy Laboratories dipped 2.07% at Rs177.80. Other front-line stocks lost around 1% each. However, select counters saw some buying and ended with gains. ACC advanced by 5.26% at Rs645.75 while Wipro, Infosys Technologies, ITC, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank ended with modest gains. Over 2.98 crore shares of Unitech changed hands on the BSE followed by IFCI (2.57 crore shares), Cals Refineries (2.50 crore shares), Reliance Natural Resources (2.33 crore shares) and Suzlon Energy (2.33 crore shares).
