President Horst Koehler's office says he has signed the German contribution to the euro750 billion ($1 trillion) rescue package for troubled eurozone countries into law. Spokesman Steffen Schulze says Koehler signed the legislation on Saturday. The law foreseeing cash and state loan guarantees to protect eurozone countries with troubled finances from bankruptcy passed both houses of parliament on Friday. Berlin's contribution may add up to euro147.6 billion in loan guarantees, should the funds be requested by one of the 16 nations using the euro. Germany's president holds a mainly ceremonial role. However, he can delay or refuse signing legislation if he deems it unconstitutional.
