For the week, except for Monday when the index was up 336 points, the index | | | posted losses on Tuesday (down 291 points), Wednesday (down 119 points) and even today (down 338 points). The mood was bearish right from the start of the session. The Sensex, taking cue from negative global indices, opened 75 points lower at 15,018. Exhibiting sharp volatility thereafter, the index eased in late morning trades and continued moving down all through the afternoon. Towards closing hours, the market witnessed frantic selling and the index came close to slip below the 14,700 level and touch the day's low of 14,687. The Sensex finally ended the session with losses of 369 points at 14,724, whereas the Nifty dropped 98 points to close at 4,431. | The market breadth, the number of advancing shares to declining shares, was negative. Of the 2,730 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,849 stocks (68%) declined, while 812 stocks (29%) advanced; 69 stocks (2.5%) ended unchanged. All sectoral indices bar BSE IT, BSE TECk and BSC HC were hammered today. The BSE Realty index tanked 7.97% followed by the BSE Bankex index (down 5.07%), the BSE CG index (down 3.71%), the BSE Power index (down 2.97%) and the BSE PSU index (down 2.75%). Reality, banking and power stocks took maximum beating today. Among reality stocks, DLF tanked 8.66% at Rs501.10, JP Associates tumbled 7.74% at Rs172.30, and Reliance Infrastructure declined 7.72% at Rs985.45. On banking front, State Bank of India plunged 6.24% at Rs1,458.20, ICICI Bank dropped 5.25% at Rs673.25 and HDFC crumbled 5.21% at Rs2,288.35 and HDFC Bank dropped 3.45%. Power stocks like BHEL fell by 4.47% at Rs1,707.50, while NTPC lost 2.55%. Other major losing stocks of the day were Larsen & Toubro, which slumped 4.84% at Rs2660.55, while Maruti Suzuki India, ACC, Reliance Industries, Hindalco, ITC, Mahindra & Mahindra, ONGC and Wipro dropped over 1-3% each. The trend bucking stocks were Infosys ( up 3.95% at Rs1,689.45), Tata Power (up 1.57% at Rs1,034.90), Satyam Computer Services (up 1.39% at Rs411.90) and Sterlite Industries (advanced 1.17% at Rs620.20). Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, and Ranbaxy Laboratories ended the day with modest gains.
