 Market Commentary

Bulls strike back; Sensex up 879 points

The market rallied sharply and closed marginally below the 18,500 mark due to sharp appreciation in capital goods, oil, and banking stocks.

After a subdued trend in last few sessions, the market staged a solid comeback today. The market rallied sharply, making up for the lost ground, after the

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) clarified its position to foreign fund investors on participatory notes. The bulls were back in action after closing flat yesterday. The Sensex took cues from buoyant international markets and resumed 296 points above its previous close at 17,910 on the back of strong buying in heavyweights, capital goods, oil, and banking stocks. The buoyancy propelled the Sensex to the day's high of 18,542 by the afternoon. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 879 points at 18,493. Nifty advanced 290 points to close at 5,474.

The market breadth was highly positive, with the gainers outpacing the losers in the ratio of 3.10:1 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Of the 2,798 stocks traded on the BSE, 2,089 stocks advanced, 658 stocks declined and 51 stocks ended unchanged. All the sectoral indices notched up significant gains. The BSE CG index was the biggest gainer and soared by 7.76% followed by the BSE PSU index (up 7.01%), the BSE Metal index (up 6.65%), the BSE Oil & Gas index (up 6.55%), the BSE Realty index (up 6.38%), the BSE Bankex index (up 5.91%) and the BSE FMCG index (up 4.08%).

Barring few, all the stocks in the Sensex basket ended at higher levels. BHEL led the upsurge and flared by 11.54% at Rs2,294. Among the other major gainers Reliance Energy surged 11.18% at Rs1,523, NTPC moved up by 8.84% at Rs217 and Bharti Airtel advanced 8.38% at Rs1,005. Reliance Industries vaulted 7.83% at Rs2,601, L&T shot up by 7.53% at Rs3,331, HDFC Bank added 7.42% at Rs1,474 and Cipla rose 7.24% at Rs193. However, TCS, Ambuja Cement, Wipro, HDFC and Infosys slipped marginally.

Capital good stocks were the star attraction during the day and rallied sharply. Punj Lloyd soared 13.08% at Rs387, Crompton Greaves jumped 10.29% at Rs365, Suzlon Energy added 9.84% at Rs1,741 and AIA Engineering gained 8.50% at Rs1,262.

Over 1.80 crore Reliance Natural Resources shares changed hands on the BSE followed by Power Grid Corporation (1.63 crore shares), Unitech (1.38 crore shares), Tata Teleservices (1.26 crore shares) and IKF Technologies (1.16 crore shares).

Unitech was the most actively traded counter on the BSE and registered a turnover of Rs447 crore followed by Reliance Energy (Rs396 crore), United Breweries (Rs366 crore), Reliance Industries (Rs297 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs235 crore).

 Market Commentary

Market recovers lost ground in late buying

Last minute buying action in banking, FMCG and capital goods stocks helped the Sensex bounce back from lower levels and end in the green.

The Sensex lost its initial grip as a lack of buying interest and sustained selling in front-line stocks dragged

the index to negative territory despite a smart recovery of over 380 points in the mid-morning trades. The Sensex, which was in a bear grip in the last few sessions, resumed in negative territory, tracking weak global cues, and fell sharply within a few minutes on heavy selling in blue chip stocks such as Reliance, Infosys and ACC. But, the index recovered as bargain hunters started buying at lower levels and touched the day's high of 17705. However, the Sensex entered in the red by afternoon on profit booking in heavyweights, information technology, oil and realty stocks. While the market maintained its negative bias for the better part of the day, the mood turned bullish towards the close and the index jumped into the green. The Sensex finally ended the session with a gain of 54 points at 17614 while the Nifty slipped 31 points to close at 5184.

The breadth of the market was neutral. Of the 2,756 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,340 stocks declined, 1,345 stocks advanced and 71 stocks ended unchanged. Most of the sectoral indices ended weak. The BSE Oil & Gas Index lost 1.59%, the BSE Teck Index declined by 1.54% and the BSE IT Index shed 1.42%. However, the BSE Bankex rose 2.17% and the BSE FMCG Index jumped by 1.16%.

Several heavyweights recovered on late buying. HDFC led the pack and shot up by 7.27% at Rs2,573. Ambuja Cement soared 4.12% at Rs145, ICICI Bank surged 3.74% at Rs1,062, M&M flared up by 3.58% at Rs754, Reliance Energy jumped by 2.76% at Rs1,370, ACC added 2.73% at Rs1,018, SBI advanced by 2.70% at Rs1,713, L&T moved up by 2.47% at Rs2,098 and Hindalco was up 2.03% at Rs178. However, Bharti Airtel slipped 4.21% at Rs928, TCS shed 2.92% at Rs1,074, Satyam Computer declined by 2.52% at Rs448, Reliance Industries fell by 2.29% at Rs2,413 and Maruti Udyog lost 1.92% at Rs1,054.

Over 5.44 crore Ambuja Cement shares changed hands on the BSE followed by Power Grid Corporation (1.61 crore shares), Reliance Natural Resources (1.54 crore shares), Tata Teleservices (97.09 lakh shares) and Reliance Petroleum (73.08 lakh shares).

Value-wise Ambuja Cement registered a turnover of Rs808 crore on the BSE followed by Reliance Energy (Rs553 crore), United Breweries (Rs509 crore), Reliance Industries (Rs480 crore) and Reliance Communication (Rs235 crore).

Sell Great Eastern Shipping October Futures with a stop loss above Rs 403 for targets of Rs 383 and Rs 375. This is a day trading recommendation.

Note: Either on the long side or on the short side if at any moment a counter is not moving beyond an initial or interim target to the final target book profits. Once initial target is crossed, you can use that as your trailing stop-loss level.

Notes:

·  All prices relate to the NSE, unless otherwise mentioned.

·  Calls are based on the previous trading day's price activity.

·  The call is valid for the next trading session only unless otherwise mentioned.

·  Stop-loss levels are given so that there is a level below/above, which the market will tell us that the call has gone wrong. Stop-loss is an essential risk control mechanism; it should always be there.

·  Trading involves considerable risk. Trade at your own risk to the extent you are comfortable. The analyst shall not be responsible for any losses incurred for acting on these recommendations.

Disclosure:The analyst and his family do not have any trades in the securities recommended above at the time of giving this recommendation. His newsletter clients have been recommended the same along with other picks. Traders are requested to adhere to the stop losses very strictly; they are given to be implemented, not ignored. Do not chase a security and take a position where you would be uncomfortable with the stop-loss level. Take a position only when you feel that the risk-reward ratio looks comfortable and favourable for the trade.
